Once you’ve decided how much you plan to use Zipcar, you’ll be asked to fill in your details, including photos of your driver’s license, and wait to be approved by the company’s verification wing.įinally, download the app to find your nearest available car and, crucially, unlock it (they’ll also send you a Zipcard for when your phone runs out of juice). There are three to choose from: Basic (no monthly fee), Smart (£6/month) and Plus (£15/month).

Same goes for drivers between the ages of 21 and 29. On top of that, you must have no more than 3 points, no major endorsements, no major violations and no alcohol and drug-related violations on your license. You’re a student, you say? Well, there is special dispensation for some students, but only those who are over 19 and go to either Oxford University, Cambridge University or Bristol University. Over 19s, however, may join, but only as an “additional driver”, and must have been driving for at least two years and are “part of an organisation that is a member of Zipcar for Business”. So what is Zipcar and how, exactly, does it work?Īnd is it, really, the smoothest way to get to Heathrow? Who can join Zipcar?Ĭrucially, Zipcar only accepts applications from drivers over the age of 23 who have been driving for at least a year. So drive a Zipcar to Gatwick, Luton, City or Stansted and you could well find yourself having to drive back to London just to find somewhere to park. Important note: Zipcar only operates inside London, and you can only use Zipcar to drive to Heathrow. Think of it like an Uber but you drive yourself.

I should emphasise that I'm a little out of date on this industry. However, there's one more little detail that we might want to add.
Certainly, it seems better to have one fleet with two potential outlets for it (both the regular rental and the car sharing) than it does to have two separate fleets each with their own specific downtime.
